NewsSuite Enterprise at Journal Register Company
alfa Media has for the last six months been working closely with American media company Journal Register Company (JRC) to desing, plan and implement a new editorial infrastruture for the 21st century.
JRC owns 22 daily newspapers plus 346 non-daily publications, as well as commercial printing and software development companies.
JRC was for quite a long time looking for a partner that could help create the distributed editorial infrastructure they were looking for. In the end alfa Media prooved to be able to be that partner. Allen Mailman, JRC’s senior vice president of technology says “... I went and looked at their editorial product at Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung in Augsburg (Germany) and I liked what I saw”.
“It’s like a Swiss watch with German precision,” Mailman said. “The scalability was better with alfa than with the other products I looked at.”
The last 6 months have prooved that to be true, there is now (September 2007) 7 JRC properties running alfa NewsSuite Enterprise. By mid 2008 all planned 17 properties will have been transitioned into the 21st century with alfa NewsSuite Enterprise.
The system can be implemented and deployed very rapidly because of the architecture chosen. A central server farm is installed in Yardley (PA) and all users work using Citrix's remote desktop application. This give unprecendented easy deployment with no requirement for complex IT infrastructure at every editorial site. In the end this gives JRC the quickest possible return on investment.

The systems run a full editorial process using the modules NewsSuite Enterprise and ProductionSuite. NewsSuite manages cross-channel news with links to associated multimedia data.
ProductionSuite supports edition planning and tracking capabilities. XML feeds are delivered to online portals at the end of the production cycle, or can be delivered on demand, according to a newspaper’s preference. alfa MEdia's e-paper solution e-dition is also so deployed so that a one-to-one representation of the daily newspaper can be read on the Web.
